Beauty of the boring School Library

Reality has been sinking for the students of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism due to their lackadaisical attitude in studying. That place is a very reliable source of knowledge, few said, Mtcheew! Oh!! It is over conducive, others murmured, whether the few were right or wrong, examination will judge.

For over a year now, it has been discovered that more than sixty percent of students studying in the Premier Monotechnic of communication; the Nigerian Institute of Journalism has been trying to avoid the institution’s study archive which was donated by Alhaji (Dr.) Wakili Hassan Adamu and was officially opened by the Military administrator of Lagos State: Colonel Olagunsoye Oyinlola on Friday, 29th March 1996.

Speaking to a National Diploma II student, Onyenucheya Adaku, she said “Since I have been in this institution, I have noticed a lot of things particularly about the library. I have been to several institution’s library and I have seen how students value and respect their study archive as the source of their academic excellence. Students avoid studying in the library because of their nonchalant attitude towards their academic studies; most students think that sitting to read in the library is a waste of time”.

A Librarian, Mr. Kingsley, was popular for saying that “ninety percent of your success in this institute is in this library.” A statement which student took with levity.

However, for students who have thirst for knowledge, they find it convenient to learn, but for others, the library is one hell of a place to study without dozing off.

“Although I had once been driven off by the unlimited comfortability which sedate my body system, but with time I got over it, having a wonderful experience to share about the convenient study centre, which I consider cool and reserved; filled with snippets of knowledge, extracts of fictional and non-fictional descriptions, with most in-depth, insightful and educative materials such as: Books, Magazines, Newspapers, encyclopedias, almanacs, course projects and all academic necessities which will help broaden my horizon of knowledge,” said Bernard Victory, an ND II part-time student of the institute.

In a discussion with an Alumni of NIJ; Olubunmi Adeyera, he took a swipe at students whose habit is to sleep in the school library, having placed two huge books on their table wide open to deceive people that they’ve studied, he gave a situation whereby a student was locked in the library as a result of sleeping.

In addition, the debacle of student toward the study archive is the ‘Library card’ which serves as a passport to accessing the library, this gave the watch dog Mrs. Chinyere every right to show students the exit door without consideration. Students often refer to her as Nigerian police who finds fault in every move of students and she is ever ready to argue any case like a lawyer who has received a brown envelop to defend a criminal case, quoting the library rules like she just memorized it.

From observations, the institution’s library records it’s highest number of student when it is two weeks to examination, which is regarded as the eleventh hour. The library would be filled with student due to carry-over-phobia.At this hour, students realize the beauty of the boring library.
