By: Stephen Adeniran
With a few weeks to marking his 365days in office, residents
of Alimosho, have hailed the Lagos state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, for his
unyielding commitment to lighting up the state through the project tagged “Light
up Lagos” all across the LGs/LCDAs.
Ambode, who was present to commission the ‘Light up Lagos’
project in Ile-Zik to Sango-Otta road
and others on Tuesday, 12th April 2016, said the initiative was necessary to
ensure a competitive, safe and secure environment for the people of Lagos.
Reacting to this, the Community Development Chairman of
Agbado Okeodo, Alaye Adebayo, said that the road before the intervention of the
project was an area of insanity at night. He said the area was insecure as a
result of absence of light on the roads.
Speaking on behalf of the Agbado-Okeodo community, Alaye
said that residents of the community are full of gratitude and appreciative of
the effort of governor Ambode.
He said,
“The light up will change the state of insecurity along this road and in the whole community.
We are happy that the Governor has come to this area to do the light up and the community people are happy about it. It is a good one which we sincerely appreciate.”
Another beneficiary from Ojokoro, simply addressed as
Deaconess Emoruwa, said that the street light was an illumination that drove
away darkness.
“If darkness is away from our life, it is an achievement. We are very happy because the rate of accidents, armed robbery and others will be reduced to zero level.
“This place was dark before and now there is light. This area was a mad area before because hoodlums had places to hide but now there is nowhere for them to keep their head again.
A resident, Alhaji Kazeem, who witnessed the event, said
that he was grateful to the government for the new development.
He said,
“We are elated over the new initiative because over ten years I have been in this area, this has not happened. This was seen only at Lagos bridges before, now it has been extended down to the grassroots
“We are proud of him, he has done wonderfully well. We thank God for his life,” he stressed.
Speaking at Monsuru Shoaga Petrol Station, venue of the
event, Ambode stated that the project was in line with the 24/7 economy that
would create employment and wealth for the people.
He said,
“This project will provide adequate illumination on the highways in keeping with our operation to light up all major road and other towns in the State.
“It is very important to know that the light up project is more than lighting up roads but we are keying into the change mantra of the President Muhammadu Buhari.
“The project is extended to Federal roads. We have gotten the support of Federal government agencies to take over Federal roads.
Ambode added that other Federal roads that have been lighted
up included Maryland to Mile12,
Third Mainland Bridge; Agidingbi and Akpe road,
Allen Avenue and Opebi road, Agege and
Alimosho.
He stated that increased commercial activities have been
recorded since the project began on the 9th of December, 2016.
“There has been an increase in commercial activities on major highways and Streets at Ikeja, Third Mainland Bridge and Iyanaworo and all others. They have become pleasurable as a result of the illumination.”
Ambode further stressed that no part of the State would be
left untouched. He said that Seme in Badagry and other border towns will have
street lights by December.
He also enjoined all Lagosians to take ownership of the
public facility and protect them from willful damage and criminality.
Also speaking, Hon. Commissioner for Energy and Mineral
Resources, Mr. Olawole Oluwo, said that by illuminating Lagos roads, driving in
the night would be more pleasurable.
“Lagos State plans on bringing inner street lights to the community to ensure a good route for commuters and reduce the rate of crime,” he said.
